Living in Boerum Hill

When you reach the point when you need to move to the next place of living, it becomes pretty hard to find a convenient region, especially when we’re talking about New York City. Its boroughs are entirely diverse, but good neighborhoods in Brooklyn could be a good match for those attracted by the comfortable and peaceful atmosphere of American routine.

Living in Boerum Hill provides the best of possible experiences in Brooklyn when it’s up to living your peaceful yet full life. What are the baseline aspects people need to know before moving to the Boerum Hill neighborhood, and what specificities can stop them from renting a unit? Let’s dive into the atmosphere of a calm and fashionable suburb placed right next to the center of New York.

Boerum Hill - What’s Special About The Neighborhood

Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, is a relatively small area West of the Fort Greene neighborhood. At the first sight, it’s not a place while living where you could find anything specific, but this is the exact feature that makes the Boerum Hill neighborhood special.

The thing is this neighborhood is magnificent in its simplicity. The district is mostly residential, but it doesn’t exclude any venues for entertainment. There are no such large or widely famous attractions as the Brooklyn Museum or the King’s Theatre, but it has several smaller places to come and relax in a less ‘touristic’ atmosphere.

The neighborhood has no such market-like long roads where everything is mixed – stores, cafes, restaurants, and landmarks. But people living in Boerum Hill find a decent amount of fashionable or vibing places to go out to. There’s only one street richly peppered with restaurants, while other commercial buildings are placed either further or earlier.

The buildings of the neighborhood are old-as-gold brownstones and brick-built houses, but they were renovated and properly maintained for residents living there to feel more comfortable – thus, the rental units are at higher prices than those you can find in Bed-Stuy, for example. Add here one of the most comfortable transport configurations in Brooklyn – and you get the image.

Simply put, the ease of living in the Boerum Hill neighborhood delivers explicitly why the area is so desired by most people to live. It can give birth to such questions as “Is Boerum Hill safe?” but the locals’ peculiar way of life makes them reasonless. Boerum Hill safety is also provided by multiple protection systems vastly used while living in a region with expensive rentals.

How Much Living in Boerum Hill Costs

The neighborhood is quite small, so there is no such wide choice as it is for larger neighborhoods. It helps create a more considerate vision of the renting situation. Let’s mention once more that the diversity of homes available for living in Boerum Hill is limited to brick houses and brownstones – it means spacious premises with convenient planning.

Regarding people living in the neighborhood being calm and preferring a more measured lifestyle, the neighbors will also be a pleasant surprise. The proximity to the critical routes and fashionable shops along with commuting comforts make this area quite expensive.

To compare the prices, we’d like to mention, that the cheapest options among apartments for living in Boerum Hill are available for $2400 and higher. Most prices in this neighborhood range at the mark of about $5000 per month but the most expensive apartment we’ve found would cost potential residents about $20000 a month.

If you cannot afford such a luxurious price, consider a private room for living as a decent option. If you choose a room, not an apartment, living in Boerum Hill can be at the level of $2010 to $2700 per month depending on the conditions of renting contract you choose.

What Are the Perspectives for Professional Development in Boerum Hill

While looking at the opportunities of living in such a neighborhood, Boerum Hill admirers could think of an opportunity to base their businesses here. The main question is what are the specifics of the business you are to establish? For example, if it’s about a restaurant, a cafe, a bakery, or another place where the foods and beverages are served or sold in Boerum Hill, the issue is the place in the neighborhood and the renting price. If it’s a shop for selling goods – the best premises are on Court Street and Atlantic Ave, but those are also expensive to pay for.

Offering services to people living nearby would be a little simpler as you mostly don’t need your premise to look beautiful. From this point of view, if you’re a young specialist who provides services that are rare or unique in the neighborhood, it could be a benefit for you either at the beginning and while your business develops – ‘cause living tight one to another, people remember the ones who appear at and leave the neighborhood.

For students working part-time and full-time employees, Boerum Hill would be a perfect place for a living because of its commuting comfort (learn more below in the article).

Attractions and Curious Places in Boerum Hill

Even though the Boerum Hill neighborhood has no such broadly known landmarks, people living here or passing by can still find something more of the inside:

  • One such place is New York Transit Museum – a former Boerum Hill station turned into a museum with an interactive showcase of old trains and other curious items. For people living near who are used to something more usual as a place to explore in the neighborhood, it may be boring but for those appreciating the history of how usual things look like through history – here’s a treasure.
  • The Invisible Dog Art Center – an art center owned by an LGBTQ+ representative. The space is created with creativity, maintained to cause creativity, and developed to inspire more creativity. The large wooden sign embellishing the neighborhood suggests the entrance.
  • For those living in the neighborhood and preferring a more talkative environment, EastVille Comedy Club could become a place in Boerum Hill to visit regularly. The space allows for vibrant performances without any pomposity and leaves only a charming warm feeling of getting met with your old friends.
  • On the same avenue, Roulette Intermedium opens its doors to connoisseurs of chamber music and an intimate atmosphere allowing everyone to join their hearts through the music. Or just people living next door.

Just walk down the streets and parks of Boerum Hill and discover it can also be a decent entertainment for curious and attentive pedestrians living in the neighborhood.

The Variability of Places to Go Out in Boerum Hill

If to talk about the places to visit if living in Boerum Hill, most of them are situated on Smith Street. Some of the most remarkable are Xochitl Taqueria – a tiny and intimate place to go with a friend living in the nearest neighborhood. It offers classic dishes of Mexican cuisine, but they are so accurately balanced in flavor and odor, that it’s almost impossible to just pass by.

TALEA Beer Co. - Cobble Hill is a place right near the Invisible Dog Art Center. It’s a restaurant-brewery offering quite a considerable variety for those living in Boerum Hill or visiting the neighborhood temporarily.

It should also be mentioned that many cafes for brunch in Boerum Hill and restaurants offer Oriental cuisines. If you’re living in the neighborhood for some time, you might have chosen your favorite pizzeria, but some of the newcomers may not know much. If you’re the one, try Crown Fried Chicken & Pizza or Sottocasa. If you prefer a more elegant way of Italian cuisine, you’ll appreciate Rucola.

Boerum Hill restaurants may not be as multiple and diverse as in the nearby neighborhoods, but in case you did not find your match – ask people living here for advice.

Is It Easy to Commute From and To Boerum Hill

At every position, the transport system in the Boerum Hill neighborhood is beyond perfect.

To start from the roads, living here, you can get to Manhattan by literally any road or street:

  • Atlantic Ave goes to Brooklyn Queens Expressway which has easy access to Brooklyn Bridge;
  • going to the North-East, you use Boerum Place transforming into Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard without excessive turns;
  • Flatbush Ave goes transit to Manhattan Bridge;
  • using other roads you’ll just need to make more turns before you reach the bridges.

Mentioning metro – the Boerum Hill neighborhood borders on Atlantic Terminal and Atlantic Av - Barclays Ctr Station. Even living at a distance, it’s not long to get to the station. Some buses also go to provide public transportation. Their numbers are B57, B65, B63, B37, etc. Some people say it’s impossible to decide if the neighborhood or a city is good before living there. We won’t deny the obvious reasonability of such a meaning, but we cannot agree either. When you start discovering the Boerum Hill neighborhood (or any other), you can catch some general ideas and realize what’s the critical point for you.
