We talk a lot about the benefits of coliving for people who are new to a city. It’s the perfect way to meet new people, try new things and build a home away from home. But how exactly does coliving help you build this sense of home? What is it about coliving that’s more homely than a regular apartment? Well, here are some of the facts behind our figurings...
When you first come to a new city it can be difficult to adjust. When you’re trying to get used to Metro cards, sidewalk etiquette and salty New Yorkers screaming at you for no apparent reason (you’ll get used to it pretty quickly), the idea of home might feel literally miles away. But something as simple as being able to talk about your favorite TV shows with a roommate can instantly bring you back to earth with a dose of familiarity. Outpost is the perfect place for this, as our coliving model attracts like-minded people: people who want to explore, share with others and meet new people. And the free Netflix in our living rooms definitely helps start conversations too!
Studies have shown that interacting with other expatriates from both your own and from other countries is extremely productive in maintaining psychological balance when moving abroad, leading to ‘success and healing’ in the new environment. Outpost is nothing if not a melting pot of cultures, nationalities and ideas, which allows newbies the opportunity to feel that their culture is still valued as one of many others when they’re trying to get used to the new culture of their new home.
One of the great things about Outpost is that you never feel like you’re on your own when there’s a problem. We have a robust community working to make your experience as great as possible, including our Community Manager and House Leaders who are easy to reach when you need them. You won’t need to call the plumber or the electricity guy. You won’t need to unclog your toilet. And if you need extra coffee or toilet paper, a friendly face will bring it round to your door. How great is that?
Outpost apartments are designed with you in mind. There’s a whole field of interior design related to how spaces make us feel and we’re always innovating to find new ways to make you feel safe and at home in our coliving spaces. We always use welcoming colors with neutral, calming tones in our apartments. For instance, have you noticed how much yellow there is in Outpost houses? Color theory tells us that yellow is a calming color, as almost every culture associates yellow with sunshine, happiness and warmth. Yellow is also the most visible color of the spectrum and the first color which the human eye processes on sight. Yellow has a high light reflectance value, making it a secondary light source in any room which can combat the NYC winter blues and make you feel like you’re back home if you’re from the sunshine (or on vacation if you’re not!).
